‘Music Connected Us’ - An Exhibition Redefining Women Artists and #Girlpower

By Zoë Goetzmann, AWS Gallery

‘Music Connected Us’ Exhibition (October 7 - 9 2022)

Artists: Anna Kolosova (Paintings) and Melissa Vipritskaya Topal (Sculpture)

I’ve always felt a strong connection to female artists. This is a show about supporting women — especially for women working in the arts. Often, we fall into the trap of competition - bringing up feelings of anxiety, fear etc. This is something that all three of us [me, Anna, and Melissa – the artists] bonded over on our first meeting…
— Zoë Goetzmann

This is not an exhibition about music. Rather, it is an exhibition about collaboration. It is a show meant to capture what happens when artists – most importantly – women artists come together as colleagues and collaborators rather than as competition.

It is not surprising that women would fit into this conversation (or have something to say on this topic). In the art world, and in the arts in general, women must make their own opportunities. We must create, make, and fulfill our own spaces in this world: in a crowd, in a room, in a group of people, or in the shadows and presences of male artists and our male counterparts. Society has conditioned us to be quiet, to push our voices down and to apologise whenever necessary and possible.

In this show, you will find 13 pieces exhibited in a collaborative manner. Walking through the exhibition, one can observe how artist Anna Kolosova’s paintings and artist Melissa Vipritskaya Topal’s sculptures have been placed along the walls of the space in a semi-organic fashion. Moving your eyes up and down the walls of the gallery, the works ‘move’ like musical notes: releasing feelings of energy, joy, and even sadness. Notice Anna’s placement of graffiti and street art created via spray paint. Look towards Melissa’s mechanical and floral imageries – illustrating a balance between industrialisation and nature. Our creative collaboration creates an artistic symphony and musical composition.

Anna’s vibrant, colourful works catch the eye at every turn – creating a kaleidoscope of chaos steadied by her use of line and form. When looking at her works, viewers can find themselves lost in her intense brushstrokes created with rapid vigor.

Both artists’ energies contrast in their own personal styles and ways: Melissa’s intricate sculptural works ‘breathe’ and ‘grow’ on its own – fulfilling their own spaces on the gallery’s blank, white walls. Inspired by the likes of another female artist and sculptor Louise Nevelson, Melissa’s darker works add a much-needed sense of stoicism to the pieces on display - reminding us - of the peaks and falls, that our world has experienced in these past few years.

Melissa’s wood-working and Jigsaw-working skills (a technique most associated and practiced by more masculine counterparts) showcase her unique artistic talent. Her process represents another prime example of how this show redefines women artists and the boundaries we continue to break through our art.

Art has the power to heal. Since the beginning of time, Art has been used as a conduit to lift peoples’ spirits. This collaboration between women artists offers a sense of escapism from our chaotic world.

Music Connected Us. As artists. As women. We are stronger together in this world and in the art world, in general.

Melissa Vipritskaya Topal is a London artist whose work explores the world's intricacies through painting and sculpture using acrylics, markers and rich pigments. Through her work, she hybridises nature with mechanical tools and urban landscapes to reflect the chaos, speed and noise of big cities.

Her constant research of silhouettes, lines and forms, her curiosity and passion for experimentation with different materials, colour and form inform her own unique style.

Melissa’s pieces are exhibited across the United Kingdom, organising group exhibitions in collaboration with other artists and curators. She holds a BA Degree in Project Management and has studied previously at Central Saint Martins.
